Side effects: what is normal and what is not

Nearly everything that happens in the first month is expected and temporary. Here is the short list of things that are not.

Expected and temporary

01

Forehead swelling

Days two to four, sometimes tracking to the eyelids. Elevation and cool compresses on the forehead — never on the grafts — shorten it.

02

Numbness

Patches of reduced sensation in the donor or recipient area for weeks to a few months as small nerves recover.

03

Itching

Peaks in week two as healing progresses. Wash as directed; do not scratch.

04

Shock loss

Some existing hair around the grafts sheds temporarily and returns within a few months.

05

Pinkness

The recipient area stays pink for several weeks, longer on fair skin.

06

Small bumps

Occasional ingrown hairs as grafts break through; usually resolve on their own.

Call the clinic if you see

01

Spreading redness with heat or pus

Possible infection — treatable and uncommon, but do not wait it out.

02

Bleeding that does not stop with ten minutes of gentle pressure

Call us rather than pressing harder on grafts.

03

Fever over 38°C / 100.4°F

Any time in the first fortnight.

04

Pain that escalates after day three

Discomfort should be improving, not worsening.

05

A donor line that widens or opens

Early review lets us address it before it heals badly.

Reducing swelling and bruising

Sleep elevated for the first five nights, keep cool compresses on the forehead rather than on the grafts, avoid salt-heavy meals in the first few days, and take any prescribed steroid exactly as directed. Patients who follow all four rarely get significant swelling at all.
