Before surgery

Preparing for surgery day

What to change two weeks out, one week out, and the night before.

Countdown

2 weeks

Medication review

Stop aspirin, anti-inflammatories and blood-thinning supplements such as fish oil and vitamin E, if your physician agrees. Never stop prescribed anticoagulants without their approval.

2 weeks

Nicotine

Stop smoking and vaping. Nicotine constricts the vessels that keep grafts alive; this is the single most useful thing you can change.

1 week

Alcohol and colouring

No alcohol for five days before surgery. Colour your hair now if you plan to — not for a month afterwards.

3 days

Scalp care

Wash daily with the shampoo provided. No fibres, sprays or concealers from this point.

Night before

Rest and fasting

Sleep properly, wash your hair, and follow fasting instructions if you have chosen sedation.

Morning of

Arrival

Eat breakfast unless told otherwise, take prescribed pre-medication, wear a button shirt and arrange your ride home.

Worth arranging in advance

01

Time off

Three to five days for most people; a full week if you are in front of clients.

02

Sleeping setup

A recliner or a wedge pillow — you will sleep elevated for several nights.

03

Loose headwear

A soft, oversized hat for the drive home and the first week outdoors.

04

Someone at home

Not essential, but helpful for the first night.
