Donor area

What each technique leaves behind

Donor areas photographed immediately after surgery and years later, so the trade-off is visible rather than argued.

Scar area, counted properly

A single FUE punch wound is small. Two thousand of them are not. Total damaged skin is the number that matters, and on that measure a large-punch FUE session removes several times the skin area of a well-executed strip closure — it is simply distributed, so it is harder to see at a glance.

The practical question is not which technique scars. Both do. It is which pattern of scarring you can conceal given how you wear your hair, now and in twenty years.

What to look for in the photographs

01

Immediately after surgery

FUE leaves a shaved field of small circular wounds; FUT leaves one sutured line under hair that was never shaved.

02

At twelve months

FUE dots have faded to white points visible under clippers; the FUT line is typically around a millimetre and covered by hair growing through it.

03

Worst cases

Over-harvested FUE thins the whole donor zone and cannot be reversed. A stretched FUT scar can usually be revised or camouflaged.

04

Concealment

SMP works on both patterns — scattered dots or a linear scar — and is often the simplest fix for older work.
